The Peter White Public Library invites patrons to award-winning author, John Smolens, release of his new book Out, the sequel to Cold on Monday, April 22, at 7:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room.

Beginning where Cold ends, Out finds Del Maki recovering from surgery in his house deep in the woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  Still haunted by his wife’s death, he finds he doesn’t have the solitude to mourn as a blizzard sends numerous refugees his way.  First there is the pregnant physical therapist, later joined by her two lovers and finally a Finnish woman.  When a power outage, fallen tree, and fire make it impossible to stay in his house, they set off through the woods, where once again human nature fights with nature for survival.

John Smolens, professor emeritus of English at Northern Michigan University where he received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2006, is the author of numerous books including The Schoolmaster’s Daughter, The Anarchist, and Fire Point.  His writings also have been published in various magazines and newspapers including Writer’s Market, The Los Angeles Times, and The Boston Globe. In 2010, he received the Michigan Author of the Year Award from the Michigan Library Association.

After the presentation, there will be the opportunity for book sales and signings with Snowbound Books.  For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.

This will be the 14th time this class has been offered in our area and is presented by trained educators. To date more than 250,000 family members in 48 states across the country have completed the course.

The course is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses, teenage and adult children, significant others and friends of people with a mental illness. This course also helps people understand that this is an illness and not something they can just “deal with it, shape up” as most times they just have no control over their actions.

Admission is free for this premiere!

The Hayduke Trail is an 800-mile hiking route across Utah and Arizona. I say it’s a route because most of the time there is no trail. The route has you going up and down canyon walls, navigation is very tricky, and water sources are few and far between. What makes it all worth it is the incredible scenery and having it all to your self, because there is no one else out there.

Northern Michigan University alumni, Alex Maier is a Marquette local and the first person ever to make a documentary about this rugged hike. It took him 67 days to complete the route and it showed him a new perspective on life.

Figure it Out isn’t just about hiking the Hayduke Trail, it’s about how we can learn from the wilderness experience to live healthier lives. Hiking long trails is about 30% physical challenge and 70% mental challenge. Out there, we realize that we are the only ones standing in our way. The wilderness gives us the time and the freedom to sort ourselves out and deal with all the mental baggage that slows us down.

Even if you have no interest in hiking, Figure it Out will provide a philosophy that will make your life easier to navigate.

Frank and Allie Lee, are a vocal-driven old time duo from Western North Carolina.  Their music ranges from blues to bluegrass, yet remains rooted in the old time aesthetic.  Frank’s nylon string fretless banjo is the dominant instrument with guitar, slide guitar, and Allie’s banjo and harmonica adding to the musical texture.
