The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit

“Women’s Work is Never Done” (January 14- April 13)

Women have spent countless hours cooking, cleaning, tending fires, and caring for children. They have also created beautiful yet useful household items such as hand woven rugs, colorful quilts, embroidered tablecloths, as well as lace camisoles and clothing for their families. This exhibit looks at specific women in our community from the past and present, both housewives and servants, telling their tales in their own words. It explores a pioneer in the mid-1800s, a Victorian in Marquette in the late 1880s, a farmer’s wife during the Depression and more. Artifacts on display will include a variety of household appliances and tools as well as elegant and everyday handwork from the 1850s to the 1970s.

Opening Reception 30, 5-7 pm, and open to the general public; donations appreciated. For more information visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571.

Family members of individuals diagnosed with a mental illness may greatly benefit from a 12-week “Family to Family” education course to be offered by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness Alger/Marquette).

The 12-week series of classes is free and confidential. Classes will be held Tuesdays, February 19 through May 7, 2019, from 6pm to 8:30pm at 129 W. Baraga Avenue, Marquette, Michigan.

The course will cover a broad range of topics, including information about Schizophrenia, Mood Disorders (Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression), Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and PTSD.

This will be the 14th time this class has been offered in our area and is presented by trained educators. To date more than 250,000 family members in 48 states across the country have completed the course.

The course is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses, teenage and adult children, significant others and friends of people with a mental illness. This course also helps people understand that this is an illness and not something they can just “deal with it, shape up” as most times they just have no control over their actions.

The Peter White Public Library and the Marquette Area Blues Society invite music lovers to a concert with Troy Graham and Colton Ort on Tuesday, February 26, at 7:00 pm, part of the monthly Bluesday Tuesday series.  The concert will be held in the Library’s Community Room on the lower level.

Both Troy and Colton share a love of old-time, traditional blues, bluegrass and Americana folk music, and it shows when they deliver live.  This inventive duo brings a different approach to the blues as well as keeping the old-time traditional blues sound in mind.

Individually, they both have a long background of being on the road as working musicians, playing with bands and as solo artists.  When combined they are a musical wonder.  Currently they are touring together, with Troy on lead vocals and acoustic guitar and Colton, singing and playing the harmonica and bones.

There is no admission charge to attend this event which is co-sponsored by the Marquette Area Blues Society and the Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library.  Call 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info for more information.

[more+]

Marlene Wood has been teaching art to children and adults for over thirty years. Her passion is to teach in a way that elicits personal self-discovery, emotion, and the unleashing of creative juices. Marlene’s philosophy is that if one can learn to see correctly, all else in art is both teachable and obtainable. Marlene brings with her a diverse education and a positive and supportive approach to teaching.

She recently moved to the shores of Lake Superior from Palatine, Illinois where she owned Positive Strokes Art School and Gallery since founding it in 2000. She is happy to call the Upper Peninsula her new home, and eager to get more involved in our bustling art scene.

Her classes will be offered for eight weeks on an ongoing basis, and students are welcome to begin at any time. There will be an emphasis on drawing, seeing correctly, use of medium, value, composition, color and techniques, helping you to strengthen your ability to draw and paint what you see or want to see and become a more dynamic artist. The class is geared toward the individual, allowing artists to begin at their own level, and both individual and group instruction and attention will be provided.

Classes are offered at $20 per session or $70 for a punch card, good for four class meetings of your choosing. Materials are not provided, but if you’d like to give oils a try, you may use the teacher’s materials for $5/class.

Classes are held weekly on Thursdays from January 10 - March 7. No classes will be held on February 28. Classes will take place from both 10:00am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 3:00pm each day they are in session.

Email Tristan at tluoma@marquettemi.gov or call (906) 225-8655 to pre-register, or simply show up!

These classes are a part of the Marquette Arts and Culture Center's Creative Community Series, supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Witness the most awesome test of knowledge, memory and nerves of steel ever held in Marquette, Michigan!  The second annual Peter White Public Library Sip and Spell: A Spelling Bee for Cheaters will be held Friday March 1, 2019 at the UP Masonic Center Red Room.

Enjoy some Blackrocks Brewery beer and get in on the competition with a chance to "bet" on spellers for a chance to win fabulous prizes including a Wisconsin Dells vacation package and a stay at the Grand Hotel!

This is not just any spelling bee, but one just for adults (ages 21 and over only, please!) And not just any spelling bee format, but one where you can purchase “cheats” to help a team advance in the competition.  Bill Digneit of Double Trouble Entertainment will host the event.

Get a clue, skip words or punish another team—whatever it takes to get to the final round!  Teams will cozen, swindle and scam their way to victory by working together in the preliminary round until the field gets narrowed to just six teams. Then, it’s individual spelling time on stage!

Audience entry is only $5.00 at the door (ages 21 and over only) to enjoy the cash bar the chance to pick the winner of the Sip and Spell for prizes.  Special thanks to our sponsors: Blackrocks Brewery, Double Trouble Entertainment, Radio Results Network and Signs Unlimited!

For more information, contact Heather Steltenpohl, Development Director via phone at 906-226-4305 or 906-362-4270 or via email at heather@uproc.lib.mi.us.
