The Marquette Symphony Orchestra presents their second annual Summer Strings concert series with a kick-off performance at the Marquette Commons on Wednesday evening of Art Week! The Summer Strings are a small ensemble of string players from the MSO, formed to give musicians the chance to perform in new public spaces, expand musical offerings, and continue the MSO’s season throughout the summer months.

This performance will be happening in conjunction with the Downtown Marquette Evening Farmers Market, which will go from 5:00-7:00pm.

Summer Strings performances are free to the public, though donations are appreciated. Messiah Lutheran Church, located at 305 W. Magnetic St., will be used as a rain location.

The Marquette Symphony Orchestra’s mission is to create, provide, and promote professional performances of orchestral music through collaboration with residents and music educators of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The MSO provides five performances a year, in addition to outreach concerts at the Besse Center in Escanaba, an annual chamber music collage concert, a biannual concert for Marquette County students, and the Summer Strings concert series. Funding for the Marquette Symphony Orchestra is provided in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. The orchestra is an equal opportunity organization.

We were inspired to host a Comic Art Event after watching the DVD “24 Hour Comic” (2017 Milan Erceg Design, Inc.) and have taken ideas from other groups who have done similar “8-hour or “work day” length events.

The challenge is to create 8 pages of comic art in 8 continuous hours.  That means everything: Story, finished art, lettering, color (if applicable).  No sketches or designs or any other kind of direct preparation can be done prior to the event.  Pages can be any size, any material, any medium.  The 8 hours are continuous.

Artists will be working from 11am-7pm at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center (MACC) which is located in the lower level of the Peter White Library at 217 N. Front Street, Marquette, Michigan, in Studio #1.  Work created during the event will be on display until July 27, 2019.

Marlene Wood has been teaching art to children and adults for over thirty years. Her passion is to teach in a way that elicits personal self-discovery, emotion, and the unleashing of creative juices. Marlene’s philosophy is that if one can learn to see correctly, all else in art is both teachable and obtainable. Marlene brings with her a diverse education and a positive and supportive approach to teaching.

She recently moved to the shores of Lake Superior from Palatine, Illinois where she owned Positive Strokes Art School and Gallery since founding it in 2000. She is happy to call the Upper Peninsula her new home, and eager to get more involved in our bustling art scene.

Her classes will be offered on an ongoing basis, and students are welcome to begin at any time. There will be an emphasis on drawing, seeing correctly, use of medium, value, composition, color and techniques, helping you to strengthen your ability to draw and paint what you see or want to see and become a more dynamic artist. The class is geared toward the individual, allowing artists to begin at their own level, and both individual and group instruction and attention will be provided.

Classes are offered at $20 per session or $70 for a punch card, good for four class meetings of your choosing. Materials are not provided, but if you’d like to give oils a try, you may use the teacher’s materials for $5/class.

Email Tristan at tluoma@marquettemi.gov or call (906) 225-8655 to pre-register, or simply show up!

These classes are a part of the Marquette Arts and Culture Center's Creative Community Series, supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
