On Monday, February 26 at 7:00 pm, the Peter White Public Library is partnering with Northern Michigan University by showing Do the Right Thing in the library’s community room as a kickoff event for NMU’s Diversity Common Reader.

This 1989 classic film is set in a Brooklyn neighborhood on the hottest day of the year.  When one of the customers at a pizzeria complains that all the pictures on the walls are of Italian-Americans when most of the customers are black, violence breaks out revealing the hate and bigotry that has long been simmering.  Written and directed by Spike Lee and starring Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis and Ruby Lee, this comedic drama is rated R and runs 2 hours.

This year’s Diversity Common Reader is Nobody’s Son:  Notes from an American Life by Luis Alberto Urrea.  In a series of vignettes, Urrea depicts his childhood as a mixed race Anglo/Mexican boy growing up in San Diego during the 1960s.  On Tuesday, February 27, he will be speaking at Northern Michigan University in Jamrich Hall 1100 at 7:00 pm.

There is no admission charge to attend either event thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Peter White Public Library and Northern Michigan University. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
